Smood

One press, and it's mash. No pounding, no lumps, no gluey overworked potatoes — the Smood's spring coil flattens as you push down, forcing potato through the thin gap in its coils and turning a whole panful smooth and fluffy in seconds.

The details

The Smood is a potato masher built around a single clever idea: instead of a perforated plate you pump up and down, it uses a mirror-polished stainless steel spring. Push down once and the coil compresses, pressing food through the narrow gaps between its rings for an even, silky texture with almost no effort.

The spring also absorbs the downward force as you press, which is noticeably easier on your wrist than a traditional masher. A multi-grip handle lets you hold it however feels natural, and a built-in silicone scraper on the head means you can sweep every last bit of mash out of the pot without reaching for a spatula.

It measures 11.4 inches long and weighs about half a pound — substantial enough to feel like a real tool, light enough to use one-handed. The polished coils rinse clean easily, and the whole thing is dishwasher safe. Made from BPA-free, FDA and LFGB-approved materials, with a silicone scraper that's heat resistant to 500°F.
