The 2.5-inch dial reads from 100°F to 500°F and has the candy stages printed right on the face: jelly, soft ball, firm ball, hard ball, hard crack, caramel, and deep fry. An adjustable marker rotates around the dial so you can set your target temperature before you start and see at a glance when you've arrived.

A stainless steel clip holds it steady on the side of the pot for hands-free monitoring. When you're done, it goes right in the dishwasher.
