Red Day Espresso
Red Day Coffee Company
Whole Bean
12 oz Bag
Some coffee travels thousands of miles before it ever reaches a cup. Ours doesn't have to travel far at all — it's roasted a few blocks from where it's poured, in Wagner, South Dakota, by people who wanted more say over what ends up in every bag.
The details
Red Day Coffee Company grew out of Grind House 46, the Wagner coffee shop Kip and Amelia Spotted Eagle have run for the past four years. After years of pulling espresso and pouring cold brew, they wanted more control over the coffee itself, so they fired up a roaster of their own and started Red Day Coffee Company as a second venture — beans roasted just blocks from the original shop. Hawk Zephier, who started out behind the espresso machine as a Grind House barista, now leads the roasting.
Red Day is rooted on the Yankton Sioux Reservation, and the Spotted Eagles built it around a gap they saw clearly: there are very few Native American–owned coffee roasters in South Dakota, and fewer still operating on a reservation. That identity isn't just a backstory — it shapes the coffee. The team is working to fuse coffee with northern Indigenous flavor traditions, experimenting with regional ingredients like chokecherry and other plants their tribe has used for generations.
Sourcing, for Red Day, is about more than picking good green beans. Kip Spotted Eagle has talked about wanting to build direct relationships with Indigenous coffee farmers abroad — in places like Guatemala, where Indigenous growers are deeply woven into the coffee trade — so the line from farmer to roaster feels like a human connection, not just a supply chain.
Why we carry it at Berry + Basil
- Miriam, our manager, sought this roaster out herself — she wanted a genuine local partner for our coffee lineup, not another national label
- Small-batch roasted in Wagner, South Dakota, close enough that freshness isn't a marketing claim
- Native-owned and community-rooted, founded by Kip and Amelia Spotted Eagle on the Yankton Sioux Reservation
- Built with real ambition: fusing Indigenous flavor traditions into the coffee and working toward direct trade with Indigenous farmers overseas
- Backs a small crew hoping to grow into a steady source of local jobs and a point of pride for their community
- Every bag carries a place and a name behind it, not just a roast date
